You can see by the smile on his face how much he enjoys it! Next time I will have to bring my “real” camera instead of depending on my iPhone.

My clients have the choice to have their portrait session held in studio or at the location of their choice. Here are a few factors to consider before deciding where to have your portrait session:

Your family’s personality and style.

You definitely want your portraits to reflect who you are and not what you think a family portrait should be. The location you choose can actually help your personality shine through – by how it looks but also how it makes you feel while you’re there! I often recommend location sessions for families so they will feel more comfortable and interact more naturally than if they were posed inside the studio. Sometimes my families even like to choose a place that means something special to them.

The style of your home.

Since your portraits will be displayed in your home, it often helps to think about how the colors and overall feel of the location you have chosen will look like hanging on your walls.

The ages of your children.

Location choices also depend on the age of the subjects being photographed. For example, a newborn is more likely to be  photographed in studio or at your home and a baby that can’t sit yet or a toddler that likes to run away will be a challenge to photograph in an urban setting.

The temperature/time of year.

If it is too warm or too cold outside, it may be best to choose a location where we can be indoors the whole time or somewhere we can do a little inside and outside, such as the studio or your home. Babies and children of all ages will lose interest in a portrait session rather quickly if the weather is making them uncomfortable!

For a studio session, you can expect a variety of backgrounds and a few props that are on hand, but I always encourage my clients to bring a few of their own “props” to add a personal touch to their portraits. Studio sessions are great because all of your images are done in one location, clothing changes are much easier, you don’t have to worry about what the weather is like outside and sometimes it’s just easier to keep your curious child in a smaller space instead of chasing them around a huge park!

When it comes to location sessions, you have a few types of places to choose from!

Having a session in your home automatically makes your portraits unique and gives them a personal touch you can’t get anywhere but in your everyday environment. This option can also allow us to create portraits inside as well as outside, giving you a little more variety. Plus, some children are just more comfortable in their own surroundings and we may even be able to include the family pet! During a session in your home, we can use the decor as the backdrop …

Or even a solid colored wall. I have been known to move furniture if we need to!

An urban setting in the city is not just for high school seniors but is a good fit for any family who prefers trendier clothing or just the city life!

A park is the perfect place if you love nature or if you hope to capture the bursts of color in spring or autumn! Atlanta has several large parks to choose from but I have also met clients at smaller parks closer to their home. Either way, be prepared to walk around a lot and maybe even get a little dirty!
